2023-2024 NSLA Cell Phone Policy

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The NSLA Cell Phone Policy is as follows:

All cell phones and electronic devices (i.e., AirPods, iPods, tablets, etc.) are to be turned off and out of sight before students enter the building. If such a device is seen or heard anywhere in the building, it will be confiscated. Students are responsible for maintaining the safety and security of their devices while at school.  Any confiscated devices will be returned to the student at the end of the day unless circumstances require a meeting with a parent/guardian. 

Use of devices for bullying or harassment will result in disciplinary action.

At NSLA, we understand the need for parents/guardians to communicate with their child however, this need must be balanced with maintaining the integrity of the learning environment and supporting students in focusing on academics.

To ensure there are no distractions while in school, devices are to be kept inside a book bag or pocket.  If an emergency arises and a student needs to make a phone call, he/she may go to the Main Office.  If a parent/guardian needs to contact his/her child during the school day, call the Main Office at (718) 601-2869.

Política de Teléfono Celular para Estudiantes de NSLA 2023-2024

Estimados Padres/Tutores,

La política de telefonía celular de NSLA es la siguiente:

Todos los teléfonos celulares y aparatos electrónicos (es decir, AirPods, iPods, tabletas, etc.) deben apagarse y ocultarse antes de que los estudiantes ingresen al edificio. Si el aparato electrónico se ve o se escucha en cualquier parte del edificio, será confiscado. Los estudiantes son responsables de mantener la seguridad de sus aparatos electrónicos mientras están en la escuela. Cualquier aparato confiscado solo será devuelto a un padre /tutor.

El uso de dispositivos para intimidación o acoso resultará en medidas disciplinarias.

En NSLA, entendemos la necesidad de que los padres/tutores se comuniquen con sus hijos, sin embargo, esta necesidad debe equilibrarse con el mantenimiento de la integridad del ambiente de aprendizaje y el apoyo a los estudiantes para que se enfoquen en lo académico.

Para garantizar que no haya distracciones en la escuela, los aparatos electrónicos deben mantenerse dentro de una mochila o bolsillo. Si surge una emergencia y un estudiante necesita hacer una llamada telefónica, él/ella puede ir a la oficina. Si un padre/tutor necesita comunicarse con su hijo/a durante el día escolar, pueden llamar a la oficina al (718) 601-2869.

How do I contact NSLA?  You can contact the NSLA Main Office by calling 718-601-2869 or by emailing families@ms244.org

How do I update NSLA if my number or address changes?   You can contact the Main Office by calling 718-601-2869, or send an email to families@ms244.org. Supporting documentation will be required for address changes.

How do I obtain a face-to-face letter?   Visit NSLA's Main Office or email families@ms244.org your request.

When will my child receive a Metro card?  Based on the address NSLA has on file, your child may receive a Metro card as soon as the cards are available.

How can I contact my child’s teachers?  Teachers can be reached through GAM, the NSLA online gradebook or by contacting the NSLA Parent Coordinator at 718-601-2869 Ext. 252.  

What time does school start and end?  Classes start at 8:15 AM and end at 2:35 PM

What should I do if my child will be absent from school?  If your child will be absent from school, please provide a doctor’s note or a note from you indicating why your child was absent.  If your child will be absent from school for more than a day due to prolonged illness, family emergency, or holiday travel, please call the Main Office (718-601-2869) or email families@ms244.org.

What happens if my child becomes sick at school?  If your child becomes sick at school, he/she will be taken to the clinic.  If your child is not registered at the clinic, you will be contacted because the clinic is limited in its ability to treat your child without registration.  For all emergency situations, your child will be treated by the clinic and/or EMS will be contacted.

Who do I contact if my child takes medication during the school day?  Contact the Morris Heights Health Clinic in NSLA at 718-601-2869 Ext. 327 to discuss any medication needs your child has.  Any medication will need to come with documentation from a doctor.   

What supplies should my child have throughout the year?  Your child will need to have access to pencils, pens, and notebook paper to complete assignments in and outside of school.  Additional materials may be needed for class projects.

How can I monitor my child’s grades?  You will receive Progress Reports and Report Cards throughout the school year.  Additionally, you will be able to view student grades online using GAM, the NSLA online gradebook.  

What is the NSLA cell phone policy?  Student cell phones are not to be used during the school day.  If a student is using a cell phone during class time, the student will be required to turn in the phone.  Depending on the circumstances, you may be asked to come in to pick up the phone. While in school, students need to be focused on their academics not on social media.  

Is there an after school program at NSLA?  Yes, in partnership with Mosholu Montefiore Community Center (MMCC), NSLA offers free after school programming each school day until 5:30 PM.  The application for after school will be available during the start of the new school year. All students are encouraged to attend our after school and enrichment programs.

¿Cuando mi hijo(a), recibira la tarjeta de transportacion? Según la dirección que la NSLA tiene registrada, su hijo(a) puede recibir una tarjeta Metro tan pronto como estén disponibles.

¿Como puedo ponerme en contacto con los maestros de mi hijo (a)?  Todos los maestros pueden ser contactados a travez de GAM, que es el programa de notas de NSLA, o contactando la Coordinadora de Padres al 718-601-2869 Ext. 252.

¿A qué hora comienza y termina la escuela? Las clases comienzan a las 8:15 a.m. y terminan a las 2:35 p.m.

¿Que debo hacer si mi hijo (a) estara ausente a la escuela?  Si su hijo(a) se ausentara de la escuela, usted debe traer una nota del Doctor, o una carta que indique que su hijo(a) estuvo ausente. Si su hijo(a) estará ausente de la escuela por más de un día debido a una enfermedad prolongada, una emergencia familiar o un viaje de vacaciones, llame a la oficina principal (718-601-2869) o envíe un correo electrónico a families@ms244.org.

¿Que sucedera si mi hijo(a) se enferma en la escuela?  Si su hijo(a) se enferma en la escuela, sera remitido a la clinica. Usted debe registrar a su hijo(a) en la clinica de la escuela, de lo contrario, se le llamara a usted, la clinica no acepta estudiantes que no hayan sido previamente registrados. En caso de emergencia, su hijo(a), sera atendido en la clinica o se llamara a la Ambulancia.

¿A quien puedo contactar, si mi hijo(a), toma medicinas durante el dia en la escuela?  Contacte a Morris Heights Health Center al 718-601-2869, Ext. 327, para hablar sobre las medicinas que su hijo(a) debe tomar. Todas las medicinas deben terner una carta del Doctor de su hijo(a).

¿Que clase de materiales mi hijo(a) debe usar en la ecuela?  Su hijo(a) debe usar lapices, lapiceros, y libretas para hacer su trabajo dentro y fuera de la escuela. Otros materiales tambien seran necesarios para hacer Proyectos de Investigacion.

¿Como puedo monitotear el progreso de mi hijo(a)?  Usted recibira un reporte del progreso de su hijo(a), y reporte de notas a travez del curso escolar. Ademas, usted podra ver las notas de su hijo(a) usando GAM, el sitio de Internet de NSLA para las notas de los estudiantes.

¿Cual es la poliza de NSLA con respecto a los telefonos celulares?  Los estudiantes, no pueden usar el telefono en la escuela durante el dia, deben apagarlos. Dependiendo de la circunstancia, usted sera llamado para que venga a recoger el telefono que se le confisco a su hijo(a). Cada estudiante debe enfocarse en su deberes academicos y no en las redes sociales, mientras estan en la escuela.

¿Existe un programa despues de la escuela en NSLA?  Si, en asociacion con Mosholu Montefiore Community Center, (MMCC), NSLA ofrece el programa despues de clases gratis, todos los dias hasta las 5:30 PM. La planilla para el programa estara disponible al comienzo del curso escolar. Todos los estudiantes deben tomar ventaja de este programa.
